Little Bay: a lovely little beach on St. Maarten, opposite Philipsburg

Little Bay Beach lies around the bend of Great Bay, to the south. It is yet another picture perfect beach with fine, white, powdery sand. However, depending on the tide, the stretch of sand can become narrow. This intimate little beach has the advantage of its close proximity to the capital of Philipsburg, yet being away from the day trippers of Philipsburg and the cruise ship shoppers that arrive in Great Bay.

The waters at Little Bay are calm and make for high underwater visibility. They bay is a great spot for snorkeling and has some water sports facilities, of which jetskiing, paddle boats and parasailing are the most popular. A few restaurants and bars are available on the beach as well, operated by the handful of resorts located on this beach.

Fort Amsterdam on Little Bay

For visitors interested in history and culture: don't miss to visit Fort Amsterdam built on the hilltop of Little Bay. It was erected in the late 1630s by the Dutch when they occupied the island and got into fights with the Spanish 'owners' at that time. See also the pictures to the right ->

Little Bay is like a peninsula inbetween Great Bay (Philipsburg) and Little Bay

To access the beach, follow signs on the coastal road for the Divi Resort, and short before arriving take a sharp bend to drive down the final slope and pass the gate of Divi Resort that occupies the tip of the peninsula.

If you are on your way to Little Bay or Great Bay by car, coming down the Cole Bay hill, make a few stops on the hillside to take pictures! The views down to the two adjoining bays, Great Bay and Little Bay, are absolutely amazing! Most days, cruise ships are in town, and you can see them at the pier just in front of Pointe Blanche. In the background is always the beautiful hilly skyline of St. Barth's and other tiny islands inbetween.
